Helpful Hints

RV Water Pump Maintenance

The following is a list of helpful hints for the customer. These hints are related to items that are a non-warranty issue and may help the customer find and repair water issues in the RV.

Items to Look for to Reduce Noise

    - What is Noise?
    • Noise is related to the pump, but is a result when the pump is working hard and vibrates more than usual due to the work that has to be performed to move water through the system.
      - Kinked Water Line from the Tank to the Pump
        • Eliminate kink and/or add radius clip to ensure an un-restricted water flow.
            - Tank Strainer is Plugged
            • Most generally with plastic shaving from inside the tank or algae due to poor sanitation.
              • Clean the tank strainer located inside the tank. Replace the tank strainer with a strainer that attaches directly to the pump, so cleaning the debris from the system is made easier.
                  - Faucet Aerators Can Become Clogged or the Flow Restrictor Inside the Faucet Can Cause the Pump to Cycle On and Off Excessively
                  • Turn on each faucet one at a time to determine which faucet causes the pump to sound louder. Clean the aerator and flow restrictor.
                    - Shower Head with Adjustable Flow
                    • Having the shower head at its lowest flow rate can also cause the pump to labor and result in noise. Open the shower adjustment to reduce the noise level.
                      - Winterizing Valves Can Be Very Restrictive
                      • If located on the inlet side of the pump
                      - Loose Pumping Lines are Causing Harmonic Vibration Through Coach
                      • Ensure lines are secure, especially within 18-20 inches of the water pump.

Items to Look for When Pump Will Not Prime, Run, or Discharge Water

                          - Tank Strainer is Plugged
                          • Most generally with plastic shaving from inside the tank or algae due to poor sanitation.
                          • Clean the tank strainer located inside the tank. Replace the tank strainer with a strainer that attaches directly to the pump, so cleaning the debris from the system is made easier.
                            - Plastic Shaving or Foreign Material Inside the Pump Head
                            • Causes the valves to stay open and will not provide the sucking action required to pump water.
                            • Replace valve assembly or valve kit.

Note: Do not attempt to clean the valves as damage may have resulted from the pump running dry with particles inside causing premature wear on the valves.

Items to Look for When Pump Cycles (Turns On and Shut off Continuously), Does Not Run Smoothly, or has Low Pressure

                                - Restriction in Water Line System/Full House Water Filter/Design of Water System
                                • Adjust pump pressure setting - turn on the faucet that is the furthest away from the water pump. With a 5/64 Allen wrench, turn the pressure adjustment screw clockwise until the pump runs continuously and smoothly. When correctly set, the pressure setting should be between 40-60 psi depending on the pump that is installed in the coach.
                                  - Tank Strainer is Plugged
                                  • Most generally with plastic shaving from inside the tank or algae due to poor sanitation.
                                  • Clean the tank strainer located inside the tank. Replace the tank strainer with a strainer that attaches directly to the pump so cleaning the debris from the system is made easier.
                                  • Try the ARTISSRT01T ½ Threaded or ARTISSTR01B ½ Barb strainers.
                                      - Kinked Water Line from the Tank to the Pump
                                      • Eliminate kink and/or add radius clip to ensure un-restricted water flow.
                                        - Faucet Aerators Can Become Clogged or the Flow Restrictor Inside of the Faucet Can Cause the Pump to Cycle On and Off Excessively
                                        • Turn on each faucet one at a time to determine which faucet causes the pump to sound louder. Clean the aerator and flow restrictor.

                                          Electrical Connections

                                            - Intermittent Operation may be Caused by a Loose Electrical Wire Connection or Poor Ground
                                            • Check all electrical wire connects at the pump. Ensure wires connections are tight and secure.
                                            • Check ground wire connection.
                                            • Check connections. If the wire connections are made with Scotch Locks it is recommended to remove and replace with wire nuts. Once the connection is completed, wrap the wire nut connection with electrical tape.
